Iran satellite program
Iran is set to put three new remote-sensing satellites into orbit simultaneously in a few hours, using a Russian launch pad. This will be the first time Iran launches multiple satellites into space. The devices include the country’s heaviest ever satellite, dubbed Tolou-3. It weighs 150 kilograms and is the most advanced observation satellite of Iran, so far. Tolou is 80 percent Iranian-made and represents a major step forward in the indigenization of satellite clusters technology. Iran is also planning to launch its first telecommunication satellite cluster, dubbed Shahid Soleimani, next year.
Myanmar elections
Voting is underway in the first general election in Myanmar since the ruling junta toppled the country’s last civil government in 2021. The election is being held amid a civil war that began with the 2021 coup. That means only 80 percent of Myanmar’s 330 regions, where the military has control, will be voting. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party is the favorite to win. That’s amid a boycott by anti-junta political parties. Myanmar’s military rulers have hailed the election as a way out of the ongoing civil war fought between the junta and opposition militias. But the United Nations human rights chief has questioned the prospects, noting that the vote is being held in an environment of violence and repression.
US winter storms
More than 1,500 flights were canceled or delayed across the US northeast on Saturday as winter storms hit the region during the busy travel period between Christmas and New Year’s. Officials in New York and New Jersey issued weather emergency declarations even as the storm, which began on Friday, wound down by mid-morning. Since then, at least 9 thousand flights have been cancelled or delayed in total. Authorities have warned that weather conditions could lead to further flight disruptions. In Michigan, more than 30,000 homes and businesses were without power as ice weighed on trees and power lines. People in much of the northeast region were advised to stay off the roads because of treacherous weather conditions.
