Iranian, Saudi FMs discuss bilateral ties, new defense pact with Pakistan

Foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia have discussed bilateral relations between the two countries as well as the new defense pact between the Arab kingdom and Pakistan.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with his Saudi counterpart Amir Faisal bin Farhan on Thursday, exchanging views about the bilateral relations between Tehran and Riyadh, as well as international developments.

However, the focus of the contact was a mutual defense pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the Saudi capital on Wednesday.

During the phone call on Thursday, bin Farhan Araghchi about Saudi Arabia’s the pact, which comes months after Pakistan fought a brief war with rival India.

The formal mutual defense pact between the Arab kingdom and nuclear-armed Pakistan is aimed at significantly strengthening a decades-long security partnership amid heightened regional tensions.

Bin Salman and Sharif also held an official meeting to discuss bilateral relations and the ongoing efforts and coordination to strengthen and expand these relations in various fields.

They also reviewed and exchanged views on regional and global developments, along with other topics of mutual interest.
