Greene defends Jan. 6 events as ‘just a riot’

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has downplayed what happened on January 6 at the Capitol building as "just a riot," as the Republicans’ attempts to rewrite the history of the day come full circle.

In an appearance on Steve Bannon's podcast, Greene tried to draw a contrast between the Black Lives Matter protests and the January 6 riot, saying that the racial-justice protest violence “was an attack on innocent American people, whereas January 6th was just a riot at the Capitol.”

“And if you think about what our Declaration of Independence says, it says to overthrow tyrants," Greene added. “So there’s a clear difference between January 6th and the Marxist-communist revolution that antifa, BLM, Democrat ground troops waged on the American people in 2020.”

Over the past months, the Republican allies of former US President Donald Trump, such as Reps. Andrew S. Clyde, Pat Fallon and Jody Hice, have constantly sought to justify the Jan. 6 events and cast the former president blameless.

During a House hearing in May, they even compared the riot to a “normal tourist visit” and suggested the people involved were simply misguided.

On Jan. 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the US Capitol building to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential election win against the incumbent Republican Donald Trump.

At least five people, including a police officer, were killed in the deadly riot which was carried out by right-wing supporters of Trump. More than 480 people have so far been arrested in the case.
