Pezeshkian: Iran will back whatever negotiating decisions Palestinian leaders adopt

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian says the Islamic Republic will support any initiative or decision adopted by Palestinian leaders in the course of ongoing negotiations, reaffirming Tehran’s continued backing for the Palestinian cause.

During a telephone conversation with Khalil al-Hayya, head of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Pezeshkian congratulated him on his appointment and expressed hope that his new role would serve the Palestinian people and the residents of the Gaza Strip.

The Iranian president paid tribute to Palestinian martyrs, particularly the late Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, whose assassination anniversary is being observed.

He described Haniyeh’s assassination during a visit to Iran as an “unjust criminal act” by the Israeli regime.

Haniyeh was assassinated by the Israeli regime on July 31, 2024, while he was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Pezeshkian.

Praising the resilience of the Palestinian people in the face of Israeli attacks, Pezeshkian said the hearts of the Iranian people and officials “will always remain with the oppressed people of Palestine,” adding that Iran would continue supporting the Palestinian nation “to the fullest extent possible.”

The president also commended al-Hayya’s efforts to strengthen coordination among Palestinian factions, stressing that “the Islamic Republic of Iran will support any measure, initiative, or decision taken by the Palestinian leaders in the course of negotiations.”

US President Donald Trump announced what he described as a “historic” agreement under which Hamas and other Palestinian resistance factions would surrender their weapons.

Hamas has rejected that characterization, saying it will not agree to disarm unless Israel first fulfills its own obligations under the agreement.

Negotiators had spent weeks working on the wording of the weapons clause. Hamas is reportedly prepared to transfer its weapons to a US-backed technocratic body for secure storage rather than hand them over to Israel.

Other Palestinian resistance factions have likewise rejected Washington’s interpretation, maintaining that full disarmament can only take place following the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Israel, meanwhile, has continued its brutal military aggression across Gaza while reiterating that it will not withdraw from the besieged territory until what it calls “complete demilitarization” has been achieved.

Pezeshkian said the Palestinian issue continues to occupy a central place in Iran’s foreign policy despite regional developments, calling it “the foremost issue of the Islamic world.”

He also called for greater unity and solidarity among Muslim countries, saying closer cooperation could help safeguard the interests of the Islamic Ummah and strengthen its position against common challenges.

For his part, al-Hayya said Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran symbolized the shared destiny and common stance of the Islamic Ummah toward the Palestinian cause.

He described Israel as the main source of regional instability and insecurity, noting that despite US support, the Israeli regime was in decline.

Al-Hayya also praised Iran’s resilience in the face of threats, saying the country had reshaped regional equations.

Commenting on the ongoing war in Gaza and the situation in the occupied West Bank, al-Quds, and al-Aqsa Mosque, al-Hayya thanked Iran for its continued support for the Palestinian people.

“Despite the continued attacks and pressure, the Palestinian people will remain committed to their cause and to the blood of their martyrs,” he said.

He added that Hamas is conducting political negotiations in coordination with other Palestinian factions and added that, just as the movement had remained steadfast on the battlefield, it “will not allow the Israeli regime to achieve through diplomacy what it failed to accomplish militarily.”

Al-Hayya also expressed hope that Hamas could benefit from Iran’s experience during the negotiation process to help secure the interests of the Palestinian people.

He said he hoped political and diplomatic efforts, alongside field resistance, would contribute to achieving Palestinian objectives, expressing optimism that the path launched by Operation Al-Aqsa Flood would ultimately culminate in the liberation of Palestine and al-Quds.
