US police have fired teargas and rubber bullets, and clashed with protesters in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota after protests erupted over fatal shooting of another Black man by police officers.

As angry crowds gathered outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department building on Sunday night, police in riot gear fired rubber bullets and lobbed flash bangs at protesters and let off clouds of chemical irritants.

The anti-police protests erupted when an officer fatally shot a young Black man after stopping his vehicle for a traffic violation on Sunday about 10 miles from where African-American George Floyd was killed during a police arrest in Minneapolis last May.

The slain young Black man was identified by relatives as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, said in a statement that he was monitoring the “unrest” in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis, as "our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement."

According to a statement from the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers pulled a driver over for a traffic violation and discovered "an outstanding warrant". The driver attempted to go back into the vehicle as officers tried to take him in custody, and one of the cops shot the man.

A female passenger in the car suffered "non-life threatening injuries" and was transported to a local hospital, said the statement, which did not identify the woman.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed it is "investigating an officer-involved shooting incident" in Brooklyn Center but declined to identify the victim.

The Minnesota branch of the American Civil Liberties Union said another independent agency should investigate, and demanded the immediate release of any videos of the shooting.

The group said it had "deep concerns that police here appear to have used dangling air fresheners as an excuse for making a pretextual stop, something police do all too often to target Black people."

Brooklyn City mayor Mike Elliott called the shooting "tragic".

"We are asking the protesters to continue to be peaceful and that peaceful protesters are not dealt with force," he wrote on Twitter.

Clashes broke out again soon after as another group of protesters gathered outside the Brooklyn Center Police Headquarters and were met with teargas and flash bangs.

The Minneapolis deadly police shooting comes during the ongoing trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is facing charges of manslaughter and murder over the death of George Floyd in the city last May.

Floyd’s killing sparked months of protests in the United States and around the world against racism and police brutality and attracted international outrage.
