US President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to begin an immediate ceasefire in attacks targeting each other's energy facilities.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the war between Russia and Ukraine," Trump announced on social media on Sunday, claiming that "both parties have agreed."

"Do not break it!” Trump said, seemingly in an address to the two countries' leaders, telling Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin not to strike the other side's energy infrastructure,

Trump, who is under pressure to bring down fuel prices to ease the increasing cost of living in the United States, blamed the Ukrainian president for the global fuel crisis on Saturday, calling Zelensky a troublemaker, adding that it was "time for Ukraine to get a new president"

Trump's announcement of Russia and Ukraine's agreement to an "immediate energy ceasefire" comes two days after the US president spoke on the phone with Putin.

Following the announcement of the partial ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev, Zelensky said he would not break the agreement if Putin kept his end of the deal.

“If President Trump negotiated it with Putin – please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and we will accept it,” Zelensky said.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and Russia must support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side,” Zelensky wrote on X. “For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace.”

Earlier, Zelensky had vowed to continue Kiev's attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, particularly Russia's refineries.

On Friday, Trump said he had closed a diesel deal with Putin in the phone call between the two leaders.

Trump said he and Putin had reached the diesel deal that gives the US the chance to buy inexpensive diesel fuel for Americans from Russia in an attempt to stop rising energy prices in the United States that were hurting the country's economy.

Zelensky criticized the diesel deal, describing it as a money gift to Putin that would empower Russians and provide the funds needed by Moscow to continue its military campaign in Ukraine.

Russia launched its special military operation in eastern Ukraine in February 2022, intending to stop NATO's encroachment on its western border.
