Yemeni forces shoot down ‘hostile’ Saudi drone over Ta’izz
Yemen’s armed forces say they have shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone over the western province of Ta’izz, as fighting and exchanges of fire have intensified in several areas of the region.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said the drone was brought down on Sunday while carrying out “a hostile mission” over the northwestern part of Maqbanah district.
Saree identified the aircraft as a Saudi-operated Wing Loong II armed reconnaissance drone, saying it was hit with a “suitable weapon” while flying over Ta’izz.
The shootdown came hours after Yemen’s forces said they had carried out a separate missile strike against a meeting of commanders of Saudi-backed mercenaries in Yemen. Saree said the attack involved a Yemeni-made precision ballistic missile.
Tensions in Ta’izz have risen over the weekend. Yemeni forces said they launched several drones toward positions held by Saudi-backed mercenaries on Saturday, while an explosion was heard in Ta’izz city.
Heavy clashes were also reported in the al-Kadha area in western Ta’izz, involving artillery as well as light and medium weapons, according to the report.
Arab media outlets have reported intensified fighting on the Ta’izz fronts in recent days, including retaliatory attacks around the coastal area of al-Mokha.
On July 20, the Sana’a government declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, in response to Riyadh’s “unjust and oppressive siege” on Yemen for nearly 12 years, “exploiting our resources and imposing a complete blockade.”
The Yemeni armed forces have subsequently announced many successful missions targeting Saudi-linked vessels in the Red Sea.
In March 2015, Saudi Arabia, along with its allies, enforced a blockade on Yemen, launching an all-out onslaught supported militarily, politically, and logistically by the United States and certain Western nations.
Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been killed, but Saudi Arabia has not succeeded in obtaining its main objective of reinstating a puppet regime that aligns with its interests.
