Fishermen in Italy halt activity in protest against rising fuel prices

Fishing boats in Pescara, Italy, remained docked as fishermen protested soaring fuel prices that threaten their livelihoods.

Fishing boats came to a standstill in the Italian port of Pescara, after fishermen kept their vessels moored in protest against the sharp rise in fuel prices, which is driving up operating costs and threatening the continuity of their economic activity.

Doriano Camplone, president of the "Mimo Grosso" professional fishing association in Pescara, said that fuel costs have now made sailing out to fish economically unviable, warning that a prolonged crisis could push workers in the sector to abandon their profession.

Camplone added that the fallout from the crisis is not limited to economic losses but also affects the city's food and cultural heritage, noting that the problem extends beyond Pescara to the fishing sector across Italy.

On the other hand, Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini announced the allocation of additional funding to help cover the rise in diesel costs during the period from the first of March to October. He indicated that more than 32,000 applications out of 99,000 road transport companies in the country are being processed, with the first payments to begin in the coming days.

These moves come as the Italian government announced aid worth 10 million euros for the fishing sector and 60 million euros for transport companies, in an effort to ease the burden of rising fuel prices and contain the protests.
