An open letter by 20 academic figures published in the British media outlet, The Guardian, has sparked criticism on social media. The letter purports to have been written to political prisoners in Iran.
Activist and political analyst Carlos Martinez argues that the signatories’ letter creates a false equivalence between Iran and the very powers waging criminal war of aggression against the region.
He says Iran’s 47‑year record of anti‑imperialist action — from South Africa to Palestine and Venezuela — is being dismissed as “hollow anti‑imperialism,” despite Iran’s decades of direct, practical support for Palestinian resistance.
Martinez adds that Iran’s unwavering backing of Palestine is precisely why it has long been a target of US and Israeli pressure.
He contrasts Iran with regional governments that have normalized ties with Israel while offering “zero material support” to Palestinians, noting that states like Syria and Libya were also attacked after siding with the Palestinian cause.
He says Iran, alongside Yemen and resistance forces in Lebanon and Iraq, remains a major obstacle to US-Israeli plans in the region — and for that reason continues to face aggression.
