High-ranking Israeli military officials have expressed concerns that prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be looking to escalate tensions in the Gaza Strip as a strategy to obstruct or postpone the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the occupied territories.

The Hebrew-language daily newspaper Maariv cited evaluations from senior officials in the Israeli army, suggesting that Netanyahu may not desire a resolution to the ongoing war and could potentially pursue renewed tensions in Gaza as elections draw near.

The report noted that senior military officials are growing more apprehensive that political factors may affect decisions regarding additional military offensives.

Officials have stated unequivocally that the military does not plan to engage in another offensive unless there is a definitive security requirement, asserting, “We will not participate in a new and unwarranted war.”

The reported concerns come amid an increasing debate in Israel regarding Netanyahu's management of the regime’s various fronts, along with accusations from opposition leaders that he is exploiting security matters for political gains in the lead-up to the parliamentary elections scheduled for October.

Netanyahu has notably intensified his rhetoric against Turkey in light of an Israeli strike on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province.

Figures from the Israeli opposition, including former prime minister Ehud Barak and Yair Golan, the leader of the so-called Democratic Party, have accused Netanyahu of intentionally escalating tensions with Ankara for his own political motives.

Israeli security officials have reportedly issued warnings regarding an “unnecessary” escalation with Turkey, indicating that statements from Netanyahu and minister of military affairs Israel Katz could potentially heighten tensions.

The reported discord with the military comes as Netanyahu confronts a challenging electoral environment, with recent opinion surveys indicating that his governing coalition is lacking the parliamentary majority required to form a cabinet.
