Iran launched effective, precise attacks on CIA sites during 40-day war: Report
Iran launched effective and precise attacks on several secret sites in West Asia belonging to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the latest unprovoked war of aggression against the country, according to a report.
The British news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday that at least two CIA sites were struck in March. One of the facilities was the CIA station in Saudi Arabia, which was located in the US embassy in Riyadh. Another CIA site targeted by Iran was located in eastern Iraq.
Reuters quoted its sources as saying that more CIA sites had been targeted. One source put the number at "more than one and fewer than a dozen." A second source told Reuters that several facilities were hit.
The report, however, tried to overshadow Iran's precision strike by alleging that other countries may have had a role. Citing its sources, Reuters claimed the attacks led US intelligence analysts to investigate whether Russia assisted by providing targeting information or advanced drone technology.
Two Western officials in the Persian Gulf who were briefed on intelligence reports told Reuters that analysts thought the Saudi attack involved a pair of Russian-enhanced versions of Iran's Shahed drones. One of the aircraft blew a hole through a vulnerable part of the embassy's exterior, and the second flew through the opening and detonated, they told Reuters.
Reuters quoted the sources as saying that US intelligence officials have not yet reached firm conclusions about possible Russian involvement in the attacks on CIA facilities.
US officials have previously claimed that Russia has provided targeting and other support for Iran in its strikes against US targets in the Persian Gulf region generally.
Russia has denied such reports, calling them "fake news."
Iran's military leadership has also dismissed claims about Russia's involvement in the country's retaliation against US-Israeli criminal attacks.
CIA facilities overseas include the agency's main offices in individual countries that traditionally are housed in embassies and are called stations. Additionally, the CIA maintains offices, safe houses, logistics hubs and sites involved in espionage or other operations.
