Authorities in Lebanon have detained an individual believed to be involved in espionage for Israel and accused of relaying intelligence that purportedly contributed to the assassination of several senior commanders of the Hezbollah resistance movement, including Fuad Shukr and Ibrahim Aqil.
According to a judicial official, the suspect, who is a Lebanese national, was arrested last week at Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut while he was getting ready to travel to Iraq.
The source reported that the man is thought to be affiliated with Israel's Mossad spy agency and is regarded as one of the most prominent espionage suspects identified by Lebanese authorities due to his purported access to classified information.
Investigators had been tracking the suspect's communications with foreign phone numbers considered suspicious before his arrest.
Preliminary results indicate that he regularly traveled back and forth between Lebanon and Iraq, where his wife originates, and is said to have met with individuals connected to Mossad in Turkey, where he is accused of delivering intelligence obtained in Beirut.
The judiciary official said the information supposedly provided by the suspect contributed to the identification of targets in Israeli strikes that resulted in the martyrdom of four high-ranking Hezbollah security officials in 2024.
It is believed that the officials include Fuad Shukr, who lost his life in an Israeli strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut in August 2024, and Ibrahim Aqil, who was also killed in September of the same year.
The suspect has been referred to Lebanon's military judiciary following initial investigations conducted by the Information Branch of the Internal Security Forces.
The recent arrest marks the latest development in a series of espionage investigations undertaken by Lebanese authorities since the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in early March. Officials are working to uncover suspected intelligence networks thought to have supported Israeli offensives aimed at Hezbollah personnel and infrastructure.
According to the judicial official, investigators are still probing the suspect's purported activities and potential connections to other individuals or networks functioning both inside and outside Lebanon.
