North Korea has denounced the US for approving the sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and related military equipment to South Korea, warning that the move will further increase tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

On Saturday, North Korea’s Director-General of the Foreign Policy Department said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that military cooperation between Washington and Seoul continues to expand despite growing concerns over security and stability in the region.

The official pointed to the recent US approval of nearly $300 million worth of advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment for South Korea under the Foreign Military Sales program.

Calling the agreement another example of Washington’s continued militarization of the Korean Peninsula, the official said, “US arms exports are war exports.”

The official added that North Korea would continue strengthening its self-defensive deterrent to maintain the regional balance of power.

Meanwhile, the US and the Republic of South Korea (ROK) held the sixth US-ROK Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting in Seoul on Wednesday.

The negotiations brought together military, nuclear, foreign affairs and intelligence officials from both countries.

According to the meeting’s outcomes, the NCG agreed to further develop joint military activities in response to what it described as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) advancing nuclear and missile capabilities.”

During the discussions, Washington reaffirmed its commitment to providing extended military support to South Korea.

US officials also said they would employ the full range of US capabilities, including nuclear assets, to support Seoul.

Tensions in the Peninsula were further heightened by the “Freedom Shield” joint military exercise conducted by the US and South Korea on March 19, 2026.

The large-scale drill involved around 18,000 troops and was carried out across areas surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

Several US naval strike groups and nuclear-powered submarines took part in the large-scale drills.

North Korea strongly condemned the military exercises, describing them as an “invasion rehearsal.”
