Gaza reports over 125,000 cases of rat- and parasite-linked infections: UNRWA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has reported more than 125,000 cases of infections linked to rats and parasites in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip during the first five months of the current year.

“Another crisis in the Gaza Strip. Rats and parasites are surging. Skin infections are spreading. Risk of disease is increasing,” UNRWA said in a post published on X on Thursday.

“Over 125,000 cases of skin infections related to rats and parasites were reported between January and May 2026 in the Gaza Strip.”

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees added that hundreds of UNRWA medical personnel are treating around 400 cases a day, but said they could treat more if they received adequate supplies of medication. The agency stressed that medical supplies must be allowed into Gaza on a large scale.

The grim findings come amid daily Israeli violations of the ceasefire in effect since October 10, 2025.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, those violations have killed 887 Palestinians and wounded 2,602 others so far.

The ceasefire followed two years of Israeli genocide that began in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring over 172,000 others while destroying about 90 percent of Gaza’s infrastructure, according to Gaza authorities.

Israel has continued restricting the entry of agreed humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian territory, where around 2.4 million Palestinians, including 1.5 million displaced people, are facing dire humanitarian conditions.
