Israel has carried out new airstrikes on civilian targets and multiple towns in southern Lebanon, leaving several people killed and injured and resulting in widespread destruction.

The airstrikes come as Al Mayadeen news agency reported that a ceasefire was likely to take effect between Lebanon and the Israeli regime starting tonight.

“With much follow-up and pressure from Iran, a ceasefire in Lebanon will be approved as of tonight,” a senior source told Al Mayadeen, adding that “the duration of the ceasefire will be one week, extending until the end of the ceasefire period between Iran and the United States.”

The source cautioned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will probably try to sabotage the agreement. Israeli media cited officials as saying that no such agreement has been approved.

Meanwhile, the Israeli regime has ramped up its attacks on southern Lebanon and other regions of the country. Early on Wednesday, four members of the same family were killed in an Israeli strike on the town of Jbaa in the Nabatieh district.

Three civilians were also injured in an aerial attack that hit the town of al-Abbassiyah in the Tyre district.

A southbound vehicle transporting humanitarian aid was also targeted in an Israeli strike on the Saadiyat highway on Wednesday morning, according to al-Mayadeen’s correspondent.

Footage from the scene showed a completely destroyed minivan and canned and dry goods scattered across the road.

More strikes also targeted vehicles in the Jiyyeh area and along the road between the towns of Arabsalim and Habboush.

Israeli fighter jets also carried out an aerial attack on farmland along the banks of the Litani River in the al-Wasta area, expanding the scope of attacks beyond roads and residential areas.

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli airstrikes hit multiple towns across southern Lebanon, including al-Babliyah, al-Majadil, Kharbat al-Dweir, Ansariya, Beit Yahoun, Hanine, Borj Qalaouiyeh, al-Ghandouriyah, Tayr Debba, and al-Bereghliyah, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.

The agency also reported that Israeli forces carried out controlled demolitions of more homes in the town of Bint Jbeil, causing widespread destruction in the border region.

Israel continues its airstrikes on Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States that included the Arab country.

The ceasefire was announced last week, 40 days after the US and Israel launched their war of aggression against Iran.

Israel’s military aggression in Lebanon has killed at least 2,167 people since early March, including many women and children, and injured 7061 others, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

The attacks have also displaced around 1.2 million people from their homes in southern Beirut.

On Tuesday, the US hosted a controversial diplomatic meeting between Lebanese and Israeli officials.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said in a post on X on Tuesday that he hoped the meeting would “mark the beginning of ending the suffering of the Lebanese people in general, and the southerners in particular.”

However, Israel’s cabinet spokesperson, Shosh Bedrosian, stated that Tel Aviv would not discuss a ceasefire with Lebanon.

She echoed remarks by the regime’s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, who told reporters in al-Quds ahead of the meeting that the talks would instead focus on the "disarmament of Hezbollah."

Ahead of the talks, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem urged Beirut to cancel the meeting, vowing that the resistance would continue to defend Lebanese sovereignty against the Israeli regime.
