Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says its naval forces have struck an American oil tanker in the northern Persian Gulf, setting it ablaze.
In a statement, the IRGC said the vessel was hit early Thursday and is currently burning.
“We have previously announced that under international rules and regulations, control over passage through the Strait of Hormuz rests with the Islamic Republic of Iran during wartime,” it added.
"Everyone must comply," the elite force emphasized.
The IRGC had previously warned that military and commercial vessels belonging to the US, the Israeli regime, European countries, and their supporters would not be permitted to pass through the region and would definitely be struck if detected, the statement pointed out.
The US and Israel started a fresh round of aerial aggression on Iran on February 28, some eight months after they carried out unprovoked attacks on the country. The attacks led to the martyrdom of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and more than 1.045 civilians, including women and children, as well as military commanders.
Iran began to swiftly retaliate against the strikes by launching barrages of missile and drone attacks on the Israeli-occupied territories as well as on US bases in regional countries.
