Netanyahu’s former chief of staff found dead in his home at 58

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s former chief of staff, Asher Hayon (L), dies suddenly at 58.

Asher Hayon, a longtime senior adviser to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, died suddenly Monday at age 58.

According to Netanyahu’s office, Hayon, who served as office director and later chief of staff in the Israeli prime minister’s office from 2018 to 2022, was found dead in his home in Tel Aviv.

He was a key administrative figure during a politically turbulent era marked by war, pandemic governance, and diplomatic shifts.

Israeli officials said he had stepped back from public life in recent years because of health concerns and generally avoided media attention.

The Israeli prime minister praised his former aide’s “loyalty” and “sound judgment,” noting Hayon’s involvement during major state events, including the 2021 military aggression known as Operation Guardian of the Walls, the COVID-19 crisis, and the signing of the Abraham Accords agreements.

Critics of Netanyahu’s cabinet have long argued that the period in which Hayon held senior office coincided with intensified political polarization inside the Israeli-occupied territories and heightened tensions with Palestinians and regional actors.

While Hayon himself maintained a low public profile, his role placed him within the inner circle of decision-making during those contentious years.
