US President Donald Trump has warned Canada that the country’s imports into the US will face a harsh tariff regime if it makes a trade deal with China.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday that all Canadian goods and products coming into the US will be slapped with a 100% tariff if a Canada-China trade deal goes through.
“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” he said in the post.
Trump added that if the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, “thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken.”
Trump has repeatedly used tariff threats against various countries to force them to accept his demands, though many of those threats have later been withdrawn, with Trump being forced to change his policy or scale down the tariffs.
The US president had also previously threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on several European countries to pressure them into accepting his plans to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
These threats have drawn mounting criticism from European leaders, ultimately forcing Trump to soften his stance on the acquisition proposal.
Trump has consistently used tariffs to counter the rise of China as a global economic power. However, last year, he was forced to scale down planned tariffs on Chinese imports after the policy sparked public outrage due to its economic impact on US consumers.
