Netanyahu skipped Davos amid arrest fears: Reports

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this week due to concerns he could face arrest in Switzerland under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, Israeli media have reported.

The outlets carried the report on Wednesday, noting that the regime’s president Isaac Herzog replaced Netanyahu at the event, where he met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock a day earlier.

During the meeting, Herzog complained about the absence of Israeli officials from the forum and called for the removal of ICC arrest warrants issued against Israeli officials, describing the court’s actions as “politically motivated.”

Herzog, however, stopped short of addressing the reason for the issuance of the warrants that call for the arrest of Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, his minister for military affairs at the time, over war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

The crimes stem from the regime’s war of genocide on Gaza that had begun in October 2023, and has so far claimed the lives of more than 71,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

According to the court, which issued the warrants in 2024, there were reasonable grounds to believe the two were responsible for crimes including the use of starvation as a method of warfare, intentionally directing attacks against civilians, and crimes against humanity such as murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.

The ICC warrants have been circulated to the 125 states party to the Rome Statute that helped found the court.

The states are legally obligated to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they enter their territory. Switzerland, host of the Davos forum, is a signatory to the treaty.

Ever since the launch of the war, presence of various Israeli officials, troops, and even sports teams across various countries have triggered massive popular protests by those denouncing the regime’s atrocities and calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
