An Arab human rights group has called on the United Kingdom to impose targeted sanctions on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over “incitement to violence and genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The request was submitted on Tuesday to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) by British law firm Deighton Pierce Glynn on behalf of the Arab Organization for Human Rights UK (AOHR UK), calling for financial and travel restrictions against Netanyahu.
The submission cites Netanyahu’s statements rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state and employing “religiously framed genocidal rhetoric.”
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 71,551 Palestinians have been killed and 171,372 wounded since Israel launched its genocidal war on the territory in October 2023.
A United Nations inquiry last year also concluded that remarks made by Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials amounted to “incitement to commit genocide” during the assault on Gaza.
The AOHR UK filing further holds Netanyahu responsible for “unlawful military operations in Gaza” as Israel’s highest-ranking official, as well as for overseeing the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
“The UK has already acknowledged that senior Israeli officials have promoted serious abuses of Palestinian rights,” said Mohammed Jamil, chairman of AOHR UK.
“It is no longer credible to sanction ministers while exempting the prime minister who authorizes, endorses and directs these policies. Accountability cannot stop short of the highest office,” he added.
While the UK has recognized a Palestinian state, it has largely supported the Israeli regime throughout its war on Gaza and has not formally denounced the mass killing of civilians as genocide.
The UK government faces accusations of aiding and abetting the genocide and other international law violations by continuing arms sales to Israel.
This comes despite growing public opposition, with a majority of Britons expressing sympathy for Palestinians and many describing Israel’s assault on Gaza as genocidal.
