Proposed inquiry to scrutinize France's military ties with Israel

The French Communist Party MP, Elsa Faucillon, supported by deputies from across the left, has submitted a resolution calling for a parliamentary inquiry into France's arms transfers to Israel.

The initiative comes amid growing accusations that French weapons may be linked to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Speaking at the National Assembly, Faucillon presented her resolution calling for full transparency and an immediate suspension of arms transfers to Israel.

Today, I am tabling a resolution to establish a commission of inquiry in order to shed full light on France's arms sales to Israel, and above all, to suspend them immediately, because in Gaza today, a genocide is still underway.

French Communist Party MP Elsa Faucillon

For supporters of the initiative, this inquiry is meant to clarify France's responsibility and to question what they describe as political and military complicity with Israel.

This is a very good thing, because it reminds us that there is, in fact, even if it is not claimed, not said, not proclaimed by the French state, a situation of Co-belligerence.

What is Co-belligerence? It is when two [sides] wage war while agreeing on the objectives of that war.

When she (Elsa Faucillon) calls for this commission of inquiry, it is to find out to what extent the French state has allowed French companies to be involved in the supply of weapons, for ammunition, equipment and even advanced weaponry.

Dock workers in Marseille and elsewhere have opposed this, and we can clearly see that, on the part of the French state, there is not just laxity, but a real connivance with the Zionist regime, which supplies arms, technical means, information and even propaganda, as we have seen in the media.

Other voices also welcomed the move, while questioning whether the inquiry will be allowed to lead to concrete outcomes.

It is obvious that arms are being supplied. By now [sic], these are open secrets.

We know that the Germans are doing it. We know that within Europe, many countries have done it.

I don't know whether this commission of inquiry will succeed, but it would be a good thing.

When she proposed this commission, it is to remind us that there is a problem.

France apparently has not voted for this war, and yet France is fueling a conflict while being a member of the UN Security Council.

It is therefore supposed not to fuel the conflict, but rather to seek solutions.

With this resolution now tabled in Parliament, supporters hope the inquiry will shed light on France's military links with Israel and lead to an immediate suspension of arms transfers.

For them, the issue goes beyond politics. It is about accountability, respect for international law, and France's role in a genocide that continues to devastate Gaza.
