Israel ceasefire violations
One month into the Gaza ceasefire, Israel continues to defy the agreement with near-daily strikes, killing more people. In the latest wave of attacks at least one Palestinian was killed after being shot by Israeli forces in Jabalia refugee camp, northern Gaza Strip. The southern city of Khan Yunis also came under heavy fire by Israeli helicopters. Meanwhile, Gaza’s Civil Defense says at least 51 bodies have been recovered from a mass graves in western Gaza City since Wednesday morning. The agency says efforts are still underway to retrieve more bodies. The Israeli genocidal war which began in October 2023, has so far claimed more than 69,180 lives, 245 of them since the ceasefire was announced.
Iraq election
Iraq’ election officials are expected to release the preliminary results of the parliamentary polls shortly, with reports saying the coalition led by Prime Minister Shia’ al-Sudani has won a majority. The reports cited Iraqi sources as saying that Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development list has won the largest bloc with approximately 50 out of the 329 seats up for grabs. Earlier, officials said over 12 million voters cast their ballots in the Tuesday election. That’s a turnout of more than 55 percent. These are in addition to security forces and the internally-displaced who cast their ballots on Sunday. Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission has confirmed that no technical violations were recorded during the vote.
Global hunger warning
Two UN agencies have warned that millions of people in at least a dozen countries face imminent threat of what the bodies described as catastrophic hunger. The World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization say Sudan and Gaza as well as Haiti, Mali, South Sudan and Yemen risk famine. The report also expresses very high concern about the situation in six other countries including Afghanistan and Syria. The agencies are calling for nearly 20 billion dollars in funding for food stamps and other assistance amid global cuts to international aid, especially by the United States. They say lack of funding is crippling emergency response and forcing deep ration cuts. These, they say, reduces access to food for the most vulnerable groups.
