US President Donald Trump has harshly rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his negative reaction to the favorable response of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas to a proposed ceasefire agreement, a report has revealed.
A US official told Axios news outlet on Monday that Trump had reportedly called Netanyahu on Friday to discuss Hamas’s positive response to his ceasefire proposal, which he considered good news.
The Israeli leader, however, viewed it differently, telling Trump that “this is nothing to celebrate, and that it does not mean anything.”
“I do not know why you are always so f***ing negative. This is a win. Take it,” Trump reportedly replied.
On Saturday, Netanyahu’s aides insisted that he is “totally aligned” with Trump. Yet, the US official said the exchange during Friday’s call was “contentious,” and that Trump was extremely “annoyed” with Netanyahu.
Hamas confirmed on Friday that it had agreed to free Israeli captives but it did not mention disarmament.
Trump has urged Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza and called on Hamas to release the remaining captives within 72 hours of Israel suspending its military offensive and pulling back its troops “to the agreed-upon line.”
Israel has agreed to the prisoner exchange but has not officially responded to Trump’s demand for a halt to its offensive in the besieged territory.
Hamas and the Israeli regime are scheduled to begin indirect ceasefire negotiations in Egypt on Monday.
Rubio: Gaza war tarnished Israel’s image worldwide
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the war in Gaza has severely harmed the Israeli regime’s public image worldwide.
He made the remarks after Israel announced on Saturday that it would consider suspending offensive operations in Gaza City following an agreement with Hamas on captive-abductee exchanges proposed last week by Trump.
“Whether we agree with it or not, we have seen countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and others come out and sort of signal support for or announce support for a Palestinian state … We have seen, even in our own domestic politics, some of the attacks on Israel,” he stated.
The Israeli regime has so far defied Trump’s call for an immediate end to its airstrikes on the Palestinian territory.
Rubio, however, said he was confident Israel would stop the strikes once the prisoner exchange is finalized.
“Once you agree on the logistics of how this is going to happen, I think the Israelis and everyone acknowledge you cannot release hostages in the middle of strikes, so the strikes will have to stop,” he said.
Since the Israeli regime launched its genocidal assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023, it has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians and injured nearly 170,000 others, most of them women and children.
Experts believe the real number of casualties is significantly higher, as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remain unaccounted for or are still buried under the rubble.
