Baseless claims on Persian Gulf trio islands can’t alter historical, legal facts: Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed the unfounded claims about three Persian Gulf Iranian islands in a joint statement of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Britain, stressing that hackneyed allegations cannot alter incontrovertible facts.

In a statement on Sunday, Esmaeil Baghaei said that the three islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa are an “integral” part of the Iranian territory, and that leveling unsubstantiated claims in political statements can by no means change geographical, historical, and legal realities.

Baghaei condemned the interventionist rhetoric applied in the council’s statement, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic of Iran, whilst exercising its sovereign rights, will take all necessary measures to ensure safety and security on the Iranian islands and safeguard the country’s interests within their boundaries.

The Iranian diplomat also urged the GCC to stop repeating groundless claims and to steer clear of destructive interventions of external parties, particularly Britain, whose regional policies contribute to instability in the Persian Gulf region.

Baghaei finally called for enhanced regional cooperation in order to foster mutual understanding and trust among neighboring countries, rather than to allow foreign actors to interfere in regional matters.

The Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world. However, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly laid claim to the islands.

The islands fell under British control in 1921, but on November 30, 1971, a day after British forces left the region and just two days before the UAE was to become an official federation, Iran’s sovereignty over the islands was restored.
