The Iraqis, from different factions and groups, have been eagerly waiting for the complete withdrawal of the US forces from the country.
Over the past years, several announcements for their pull-out have been made. All the waiting has been in vain. Presently, an advisor to the Iraqi prime minister has issued a statement in this regard, saying American troops would leave by the end of September, but some officials say the forces will be heading to the north of Iraq instead of leaving the country.
American statements always talk about leaving, and this is what we've heard since the declaration of victory over Daesh in 2017; even in 2020 they talked about moving to the advisory phase with a small number of troops.
But in the end, they are here to ensure that their departure will not allow them to return to Iraq again.
But we must see the reality on the ground; American bases must be handed over to Iraqi forces.

Last year, Defense Minister Thabet Muhammad Saeed al-Abbas had announced the Americans would leave bases in Baghdad and elswhere, except the North Kurdistan region, by September 2025.
However, it is unclear whether the US forces would ever leave the country in accordance with the legislation enacted by the Iraqi parliament.
There was a resolution in the Iraqi parliament calling for the withdrawal of all foreign combat forces, especially since Iraq was recovering and had the strength and capability to defend its territory.
However, we were surprised to find that US forces withdrawing from Baghdad and Anbar are heading to Erbil as if Erbil were outside Iraq.

A US Embassy statement also claimed that the coalition's mission in Iraq will be transmission to the civilian-led bilateral security partnership after the Iraqi parliament demanded the government get rid of all the foreign forces, citing a threat to Iraqi sovereignty.
As the agreement reached between Iraq and the US to not let any troops (remain) by the end of 2026, we see the US forces leaving the bases, but heading towards Erbil, however, I insist that they have to follow the deal.

As Iraq moves forward, the question of the US troops presence remains at the center of the nation's security and politics.
Iraqis want their country to remain dependent on its own forces to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity.
There are growing public calls, often expressed through the street demonstrations and chants, for the withdrawal of the US forces to achieve full sovereignty for Iraq.
For many Iraqis it is not just a political issue, but also a matter of dignity to stop foreign interference in their internal affairs.
