Two student dormitories in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz have been damaged in US airstrikes, while a sports hall in Fars Province has also been struck in separate attacks, according to Iranian officials.
Khuzestan Governor Mohammadreza Movaalizadeh said US forces carried out a series of strikes from the early hours of Thursday morning targeting areas around Abadan, Arvandkenar, the Shadegan region, and Ahvaz.
According to the governor, two locations in Ahvaz were hit, damaging the Hazrat Masoumeh (PBUH) student dormitory affiliated with Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz and a student dormitory belonging to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences.
He said provincial crisis management officials and university authorities immediately responded to the incident and visited the affected sites.
Movaalizadeh stated that parts of both dormitory complexes sustained damage, adding that some students were relocated to other dormitories.
Medical residents residing in the dormitories have continued their hospital duties and are providing healthcare services, he said.
Separately, Ali Hossein Hosseinzadeh, president of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, confirmed that no students were present in the damaged dormitory because the university is currently on summer break.
He said several blocks of the dormitory complex were damaged and that experts are assessing the extent of the destruction.
In a separate incident, US warplanes conducted airstrikes on locations in the counties of Kazerun and Farashband in Fars Province during the early hours of Thursday.
According to local reports, a sports hall in Farashband was struck by a missile, causing partial destruction of the facility. Officials said the attacks caused no casualties.
Also, three members of a family, including mother, father and their two-year-old boy, were killed in a US airstrike on a residential building on Iran’s southern Qeshm Island.
In a post on X late Wednesday local time, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces once again launched a fresh round of military aggression against Iran.
The US has been targeting southern Iranian provinces since earlier in July after violating the terms of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Tehran has responded with repeated missile and drone attacks targeting US-operated military facilities across the region under Operation Nasr 2 and Operation Sa'eqeh (Lightning).
