Haifa’s role in IMEC corridor in doubt after Iran attacks: Report

File photo from the AFP shows smoke billowing from a site in Haifa on June 16, 2025 after a fresh barrage of Iranian missiles hit the port city.

The Israeli-controlled port of Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea has lost its position as a major connectivity point on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a planned route which seeks to boost trade links between Asia and Europe through areas occupied by the Israeli regime, a report shows.

The Saturday report by the Tasnim news agency said Iran’s missile attacks on Haifa, which were made in response to Israel’s aggression against Iran starting in mid-June, were a final blow to Israel’s dreams of becoming a regional transit hub through increased activity in the port.

The report cited a recent assessment by the British maritime security firm Ambrey, which has classified Haifa as a high-risk port for cargo ships.

It said the designation makes major global shipping companies to have second thoughts about delivering cargoes to Haifa, adding that the issue would cause a major drop in loading and unloading operations in the port and would lead to severe disruption in Israel’s ability to procure goods and commodities to its own markets.

The Haifa port is Israel’s largest trade gateway and is responsible for a bulk of the regime’s imports of fuel, basic goods, medicine, and manufacturing equipment. The port handles more than 30 million metric tons of commodities per year with a container capacity of 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

However, recent attacks by Iran, which caused massive devastation to Haifa’s economic infrastructure, including its energy installations, were a blow to Israeli and US plans to make the port a key point on the IMEC, the Tasnim report said.

It said that Israel had done its utmost to make Haifa a unique transit point in the region and even cited statements from economic analysts suggesting that Israel was behind the massive explosion that rocked the rival port of Beirut in 2020.

Iranian attacks on Israel, which ended on June 24 upon the declaration of a ceasefire, were mostly focused on Haifa and the regime's capital of Tel Aviv.

Reports show the attacks have inflicted heavy destruction and losses on Israel despite massive efforts by the regime to hide the damage from the attacks.
