Natural gas consumption by Iranian power plants has reached new records amid rising demand for electricity in the country.
Figures released by the Iranian Oil Ministry on Monday showed that the nationwide gas grid in the country had supplied a record of 287 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas to thermal power plants on June 2.
The figures showed that power plants in Iran had burned an average of more than 281 million mcm per day of natural gas on June 1-6, accounting for more than 44% of the total demand in the country.
Industries and households each used an average of 170 million mcm per day of gas over the same period, the figures showed.
The rising use of natural gas in the Iranian electricity sector comes as the country has been struggling to respond to a rising demand for power since late May, when temperatures reached record highs, causing millions of households to turn on their air conditioning systems earlier than expected.
That has forced the Iranian Energy Ministry to introduce brief power cuts in cities and towns while restricting electricity supplies to large manufacturers
Industry figures show Iranian power plants consume some 79 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas per year, nearly a third of the country’s total annual gas production.
The same data show that the share of gas in power generation in Iran has increased from 35% in 1985 to 86% in 2022.
That comes as the global power plant demand for natural gas rose from 14% to 23% over the same period.
