Thousands of Spaniards took to the streets of the Spanish capital Madrid on Saturday to protest against the proposal by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on increasing member states' military spending to five percent of their GDP.
The demonstration came just days before NATO's summit in the Hague, Netherlands, with participants chanting slogans of opposing NATO and shutting down US military bases in Spain's soil.
The protesters also waved Palestinian flags to show solidarity with and support for the Palestinian people in Gaza who are enduring Israeli airstrikes, and called on the European Union to implement sanctions against Israel.
The protesters said that further increases in military spending are unacceptable as people are yearning for peace rather than more wars.
Noting that the current global situation remains unstable, they called NATO's existence as a major factor. They further said that the expansion of military expenditures has directly led to cuts in social spending, particularly the significant reductions in funding for essential public services like education and healthcare.
