Two people have been killed and four others have been wounded in a shooting incident outside a church in Brooklyn, New York City, authorities say.
The shooting occurred on Monday evening near the Emmanuel Church of God, which is a Pentecostal church, following a crowded funeral.
Two 40-year-old men were shot and later pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center. Two women, ages 38 and 29, and two other men, ages 37 and 44, were wounded with one of them in critical condition.
The incident happened when the victims, who had attended the funeral of a 38-year-old man, were walking on the street after they left the church.
It was not clear how many people fired shots and why, but police began investigation believing that there was more than one gunman. So far, no suspect has been identified and arrested.
“There’s mass confusion out there,” said Stephen Davis, the police department’s chief spokesman.
“I heard so many shots,” said Raul Marroqin, who attended the funeral. “Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop. I threw myself to the floor, grabbed my kids.”
The shooting in Brooklyn came almost two weeks after a similar incident there on April 17 left a teenager dead and another seriously injured.
Dantee Bascom, 16, and his 13-year-old cousin Michael Parnell were shot while sitting on a bench near the Marcy Houses complex. Bascom was taken to Kings County Hospital Center but was pronounced dead later. Parnell, who was shot twice in the torso and once in the leg, was hospitalized.
Gun violence is rife in the United States and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that more than 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the country.
