A security guard has been killed in a shooting incident at the headquarters of US Census Bureau in the state of Maryland.
Lawrence Buckner, 59, died in a hospital shortly after being shot in the chest Thursday evening in Suitland, Maryland, about 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of Washington, DC.
The Washington Post reports that the incident resulted in a police chase, which ended in gunfire several miles away in Washington, DC.
Police say the suspect was shot and apprehended after a chase. At least two police officers suffered minor injuries in the incident.
The string of incidents is believed to have begun when the armed suspect kidnapped a woman around 5:30 pm in Northeast Washington, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Thursday.
Lanier said investigators believe the car involved in the shootout and police chase was also involved in the earlier kidnapping and shooting at the Census Bureau.
Each year, more than 32,000 people die as a consequence of gun-related violence, suicides, and accidents in the United States, which is by far the highest among industrialized countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The US averages 87 deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
Gun-related casualties have turned into a “major public health crisis” in the United States, according to a recent report by eight US medical associations.
