Europe anti-govt. protests

French police have attacked protesters in several cities, as more than 100 demonstrations take place nationwide amid growing public anger over the rising cost of living. French police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in the city of Lyon while over a hundred and 40 people were arrested in Paris. Thousands of demonstrators also took to the streets in the cities of Orleans, Nantes and Bordeaux. Nearly 800,000 people reportedly rallied across France, including 250,000 in Paris.

Over 70,000 police and security personnel have been deployed across the country to suppress the unrest, which began with student protests over underfunded schools and staff shortages. It has now expanded into a broader movement against rising living costs, stagnant wages and deteriorating public services. Protesters gathered outside Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office demanding that he step down from office. The demonstrators burned symbolic pillows outside the office before marching towards the education ministry, where another student protest was underway. Police deployed water cannons and riot units to confront the protesters. The demonstrations, now in their second week, began with students demanding lower tuition fees and improved university conditions before expanding into a broader movement against the government. Thousands also marched in the Spanish capital Madrid protesting the cost of living and demanding an increase in pensions.

Iran warning

The spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps says Tehran will respond to the slightest mistake by the enemy with a response many times greater. Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said the enemy knows better than anyone that under the current circumstances, it is unable to carry out an effective operation and will certainly fail to achieve its objectives. He said just as the enemy was defeated by the resilience of the Iranian people in the past, it will suffer defeat again if it repeats its mistake. The IRGC spokesman said the US threats are intended for domestic consumption, aimed at saving the Republican Party from defeat ahead of elections.
