US losing response capability as Iran maintains control of Strait of Hormuz: IRGC
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says the United States has not responded to recent Iranian measures against vessels violating transit regulations in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the Islamic Republic’s full control over the strategic waterway.
Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, the IRGC spokesman, said in a televised address on Wednesday that Iranian armed forces had taken action against some vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours, while the passage of some smaller vessels had also been prevented.
General Mohebbi said US military forces had not responded to any of these actions.
He said that under current circumstances, the United States no longer has the military capacity to carry out operations on the scale it did previously.
The IRGC spokesman said Washington had previously underestimated the Islamic Republic’s ability to withstand military pressure but had now come to understand its military capabilities.
“The Americans believed that simply having a military presence in the region and displaying their military hardware would be enough to force Iran to surrender,” he said, adding that shortly after US forces were deployed in the region, “the US president expressed surprise that Iran had not surrendered.”
The US, he said, is no longer in the same position it had been during previous phases of the war, as its forces have suffered significant attrition and its military presence in the region has declined.
According to General Mohebbi, the number of US military bases in the region had fallen by roughly half, while weapons, launchers, and other systems used by American forces had sustained significant damage.
The US had previously used a command center in Bahrain to direct operations in the region, but it can no longer use the center to direct its operations as it did in the past, he added.
In separate remarks on Saturday, the IRGC spokesman said Washington had declared securing freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as one of its objectives in the war against Iran, but had failed to achieve it.
Describing Iran as having emerged victorious from the recent US war of aggression, Mohebbi vowed that the Islamic Republic would turn that victory into “permanent strategic deterrence” across the region.
He also vowed that the Islamic Republic would continue punishing the aggressor until Tehran’s seven conditions are met.
Iran has set out its conditions for resuming talks with the United States and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
