Iran expects Russia to deliver ‘serious response’ to Ukraine’s Caspian Sea attack: Envoy
Iran's ambassador to Russia says Tehran expects Moscow to respond decisively to Ukraine’s deadly assault against an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea.
Kazem Jalali made the remarks in Moscow on Monday, two days after the merchant ship Anna, which was carrying a cargo of iron from the Russian port of Astrakhan to Iran’s Bandar Anzali, came under a Ukrainian attack, killing one sailor and injuring several others.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed the vessel targeted in the Caspian Sea was carrying military cargo from Iran to Russia.
Jalali denounced Ukraine's strike on the “fully civilian ship,” which was not transporting any military cargo, as a “criminal act”.
“At the time of the Ukrainian drone attack, the vessel Anna was anchored about five kilometers from the entrance to the Volga River, awaiting calmer weather before continuing its journey. As a friendly nation, Russia is expected to provide a serious response to these criminal attacks,” he added.
The envoy also noted that after the attack, Iran’s consulate general in Astrakhan worked closely with Russian authorities to facilitate the swift evacuation of Iranian crew members from the area.
Meanwhile, he emphasized that the incident was the main subject of a telephone conversation on Sunday between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
During the call, Araghchi placed a premium on Iran’s right to respond to the attack and said any decision serving the Islamic Republic’s national interests would be taken by the country's leadership, according to Jalali.
Earlier, the top Iranian diplomat said in an X post that the attack constituted a “blatant” violation of the United Nations Charter.
He added that the “freeloader” Ukrainian president had orchestrated the assault at the Israeli regime's behest, warning that it "cannot go unanswered."
Similarly, head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Ebrahim Azizi warned that any attack on the country always carries a cost.
