Revealed: British forces abused Afghans ‘for fun’ during occupation

A UK inquiry hears that British special forces used to make fun of Afghan detainees.

An official inquiry in the United Kingdom has been told that British forces stationed in Afghanistan during the occupation years between 2010 and 2013 were abusing Afghan detainees just "for fun."

Monica Grenfell, a woman who has worked with UK Special Forces, has given evidence to the Afghanistan Inquiry showing that UK servicemen had mistreated prisoners during deployments in Afghanistan, according to statements released on Tuesday.

The evidence included Grenfell’s conversations with a former member of the UK Special Forces, identified only as Name3, with a history of deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“I specifically recall him telling me that he would put prisoners on a forklift, raise it, and drive very fast so that they fell off...He said that he behaved in the same way in Afghanistan,” she said.

“I was appalled…He wasn't doing anything alone, but it was something they did for fun, doing this and jamming on the brakes so they fell off.”

The witness has also given testimony to the inquiry suggesting that the UK special forces have been operating almost freely over the years without proper oversight from the military and the government.

The statements are the latest to come from an inquiry that is investigating the claims of unlawful killings by UK Special Forces during operations in Afghanistan between 2010 and 2013.

Other whistleblowers, including Christopher Green, who served in Afghanistan in 2012, have come forward to give testimony to the inquiry.

Under growing pressure from the public, the British government has agreed to back the inquiry, which many believe would expose crimes committed during the US-led occupation of Afghanistan.

The UK government was a major partner in international campaigns by the US which led to the occupation of Afghanistan and later Iraq in the 2010s.
