Protesters demand release of Palestinian healthcare workers

Holding banners and chanting outside the British Prime Minister's office, demonstrators called for the immediate release of Dr. Hassan Abu Safiya and other Palestinian healthcare workers held in Israeli jails.

Dr Abu Safiya was the director of the Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza when he was detained by Israeli forces in December 2024.

Campaigners say they are determined to keep public attention focused on the oppression of Palestinians, despite dwindling international media coverage.

It has largely abandoned the Palestinian people, despite the fact that the suffering goes on in Gaza, despite the fact that the repression on the West Bank has actually intensified, despite the fact that there's been no justice whatsoever for the Palestinians.

And, so, it is very important for us to keep protesting and to keep the solidarity movement, the unprecedented absolutely massive solidarity movement that does exist, in the streets.

Chris Nineham, Stop the War Coalition, Vice Chair

Tuesday’s demonstration heard a fresh warning from Dr Abu Safiya's lawyer, Nasser Odeh, who said the doctor is almost unrecognizable because of severe injuries sustained during his detention.

He warned that Dr Abu Safiya faces a tangible danger to his life having been held for 18 months without charge or trial, prompting renewed calls for the government to intervene.

We have come here to call on the British government to take meaningful action.

We heard a couple of days ago that the Minister of State, Amy Faulkner, has raised the issue, the case of Dr. Abu Safiya with the Israel, but it's once again completely inadequate.

Strong words but no action.

So, what we're calling for the British Government to do is to impose meaningful sanctions against Israel, including a full arms embargo to put pressure on Israel to release Dr. Hussam and all other Palestinian prisoners who are unjustly detained by Israel.

Peter Leary, Deputy Director, Palestine Solidarity Campaign

Speakers at the rally said statements of concern are no longer enough, arguing that the government must translate words into concrete measures.

Organizers say the demonstration is also intended to encourage similar solidarity rallies across the UK and around the world.

We had a rules-based order coming out of the Second World War that Britain was proud to be part of, and made the United Nations and all that, and they've allowed Trump in America, American imperialism, and others, the Zionist state, to ride roughshod over that, tear up all those international agreements.

More people need to turn up. But I do think the tide is turning.

Protestor 01

Dr Abu Safiya, a pediatrician, has been a prominent voice highlighting the devastation of Gaza's healthcare sector during the Israeli war.

Like many healthcare workers before him, the Palestinian doctor was detained while caring for his patients.

Standing outside Downing Street, protesters say they will continue demanding the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and other detained Palestinian health care workers.

They say new warnings from Dr. Abu Safiya's lawyer that his life is in danger, after 18 months of detention without charge have reinforced their calls for his immediate release.
