Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Iraq’s holy city of Najaf to attend the funeral ceremony for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Upon his arrival at Najaf International Airport, President Pezeshkian was officially received by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Tuesday.

The body of Ayatollah Khamenei is also scheduled to arrive in Najaf on Tuesday evening, ahead of the funeral procession and ceremonies that will be held in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday.

In addition to attending the official ceremony to receive the Leader’s body, President Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold talks with the Iraqi prime minister on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.

The management of the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf said in a statement that it has finalized preparations for the funeral procession in coordination with Iraqi authorities.

It said a comprehensive operational plan has been put in place to ensure security, logistics, public services, media coverage, and crowd management during the procession.

Adnan al-Arabi, director of public relations for the central media committee overseeing Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral in the holy city, praised the efforts of Iraqi authorities involved in the preparations, saying the ceremony would be held with dignity and receive extensive media coverage befitting its significance.

The funeral procession in Iraq comes as mourning ceremonies for the martyred Leader and members of his family continue across Iran.

The nationwide funeral ceremonies began on Friday, with foreign dignitaries and religious figures paying their respects at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla, followed by public farewell ceremonies and funeral prayers in Tehran and the holy city of Qom.

The ceremonies will conclude on July 9 in Ayatollah Khamenei’s hometown of Mashhad, where he will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam.

Ayatollah Khamenei was assassinated by the United States and Israel in an attack on his office in Tehran on February 28, the first day of a joint aggression against Iran.
