Canadians give FIFA and Israel red card

Fans flooded Toronto streets for the city's final FIFA World Cup match. Tens of thousands made their way to the stadium with Palestinian flags appearing amid the fanfare.

Fans entering the city towards the stadium saw activists unfurl umbrellas on an overpass spelling 'Red Card Israel' over one of Toronto's busiest highway corridors.

We wanted to send a farewell message to FIFA, telling them that they have to kick Israel out of FIFA.

The CEO of FIFA is on the Board of Peace. He is entirely complicit, Infantino. He's been referred to the ICJ.

The reality is, Israel has bombed every single soccer pitch in Gaza.

Activists argue that FIFA's constitution strictly forbids any association of its members from playing matches on the territory of another without permission, however, Israeli league clubs based in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank have done so with FIFA actively facilitating and broadcasting the matches on its official channel.

It is argued that this constitutes de facto recognition of illegal annexation.

The United States should have no part in this, neither Canada nor the United States; two very, very complicit countries that are the primary funders and armers [sic] (arms suppliers) of this genocide, have no business hosting this.

The only business they have is to be in front of The Hague.

The fact that we are still supplying the Israeli military, the fact that we don't have a two-way arms embargo, the fact that Canadian weapons are making their way to Israel by way of loopholes through the United States, it's, it's disgusting.

Another group held banners near the perimeter of the stadium to bring attention to the hundreds of Palestinian footballers and athletes killed by Israel.

Israel and the US should be banned from FIFA, because we've seen over the last three years of the escalation of the genocide in Palestine, Israel, the US, and Canada are deeply complicit in the continuing massacres that have not stopped, even though they say, you know, there's a ceasefire, and that's why we believe that they shouldn't be participants in FIFA, the IOC, and also shouldn't be allowed to host international sports.

For critics of FIFA, the erasure of Palestinian sport is a feature of occupation and represents the sports washing of genocide under the banner of the world's most popular game.

With the round of 32 coming to a close, the United States will host the majority of the remaining matches in a tournament that, for many, will be remembered as the worst in World Cup history.
