Israeli authorities have arrested a Tajik national holding Russian citizenship on allegations of cooperating with Iranian intelligence officials, with prosecutors preparing to file espionage-related charges against him, according to Israeli media.
Israel's war ministry, police and so-called internal security agency, Shin Bet, announced that prosecutors are now preparing an indictment against Behrouz Sobrigon, a Tajik national who also holds a Russian passport, after he was arrested last month, the Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Thursday.
Israeli authorities claimed that the individual had allegedly been in contact with Iranian intelligence operatives since January, claiming that during the recent war, Sobrigon allegedly transmitted intelligence, including information on the impact sites of Iranian ballistic missiles, as well as several sensitive locations across the occupied territories.
They further claimed that Sobirigun photographed the Azrieli Towers, the port of Haifa, and a sensitive security facility in the northern occupied territories.
Israeli security authorities also claimed the suspect was involved in recruiting other individuals to cooperate with operatives allegedly linked to Iran.
Israel's Ynet newspaper also claimed that most of Sobrigon’s activity took place during the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran that lasted for 40 days, when he purportedly sought to help the Islamic Republic achieve operational gains and advance its objectives against the occupying entity.
Israeli officials said prosecutors have asked the Tel Aviv District Court to keep the suspect in custody until the conclusion of legal proceedings while the indictment is filed.
The latest allegations come amid a series of announcements by Israeli authorities in recent months claiming to have arrested multiple individuals on suspicion of cooperating with Iran.
On Wednesday, former head of the Israeli military’s so-called Information Security Department said that more than 80 people have been arrested on suspicion of collecting intelligence from Israeli military bases during the 40-day war against Iran.
