Israel launches new incursion into south Syria days after Mossad chief meets HTS diplomat
The Israeli military has carried out a new raid in the countryside of Syria's southern province of Dara’a, only two days after the top diplomat of Syria’s ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the director of the Israeli Mossad spy agency held a meeting to defuse tensions following an attack on an airport in northern Syria.
Israeli occupation forces advanced with five military vehicles into the Majham Room area in the Yarmouk Basin early on Tuesday. Israeli forces deployed around the Majham Room area and installed a checkpoint before withdrawing from the region.
No abductions were immediately reported, local media said.
The development came shortly after Israeli troops launched an incursion into the village of Saida al-Golan in Syria’s southwestern Quneitra province.
Israeli forces searched a farm in the vicinity of the village, according to al-Ikhbariyah Syria television news channel.
Earlier in the day, Israeli military forces raided the village of Maariya on board six vehicles and with infantry personnel, who deployed near a neighborhood adjacent to the main road amid intensive drone activity over the area.
The forces then carried out a raid and search operation in the area before withdrawing toward the al-Jazeera military post.
The latest attacks come despite the fact that Asaad al-Shaibani and Roman Gofman held a high-level meeting in Jordan on Sunday.
They discussed issues such as establishing “a special operations room” in Jordan, under the supervision of the US, to avert any potential confrontations in Syria, including those that may involve Turkey, two informed sources told AFP news agency.
Israeli warplanes carried out eight airstrikes on the runway of the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province on August 18, damaging its infrastructure as a Turkish military delegation was visiting the site.
Following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s administration in early December 2024, the Israeli military has been conducting airstrikes aimed at military sites, facilities, and stockpiles that were formerly managed by the Syrian army.
Israel has faced considerable criticism for ending the 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria and taking advantage of the chaos in the war-torn nation to seize territory.
The majority of Israeli airstrikes have concentrated on the southern Syrian provinces of Quneitra, Dara’a, and Damascus, accounting for approximately 80 percent of all recorded Israeli attacks.
