Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin says Russian air defense forces shot down 84 drones approaching the capital city as Ukraine intensifies its attacks against civilian targets.
The capital city official published multiple posts on Telegram starting from 03:00 a.m. local time (0:00 Greenwich Mean Time), reporting as Ukrainian Unmanned Aviation Vehicles approaching Moscow overnight were downed by Russian air defense forces.
During the attack, flight restrictions were temporarily imposed by Russian aviation authorities at several of the airports in the Moscow area.
Authorities did not immediately report any casualties or significant damage from the attack. Sobyanin wrote on Telegram, "Emergency service specialists are working at the debris fall sites."
Ukraine's drone attacks targeting Moscow and other Russian regions have become increasingly frequent during the conflict that has continued since 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced last week that Kiev had used upgraded drones to target oil refineries deep inside Russian territory.
In response, Russia staged retaliatory strikes targeting key energy sites across Ukraine.
Moscow launched its special military operation in Ukraine in early 2022 to stop NATO's eastward encroachment on Russian borders.
Western media reports reveal that tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have deserted the country's military forces.
Some 200,000 Ukrainian soldiers have reportedly left their units without authorization, plunging Kiev's leadership into an exacerbating recruitment crisis.
Ukrainian army deserters cite mistrust in leadership, exhaustion, depression, and the sometimes violent methods used to enlist new recruits to serve on the front lines as reasons for the mass desertion.
The dire situation in Ukraine's military underscores Kiev's anxiety to reach a quick ceasefire agreement, and eventually a peace deal, with Moscow.
