The spokesman for Iran's negotiating team, Esmaeil Baghaei, says the planned negotiations with the United States in Switzerland is centered on demanding the opposite side's fulfillment of its obligations as per a recently-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman made the remark in a post on his X account on Sunday as he is accompanying the negotiating team in talks which are expected to take place between Iranian and American delegations in Switzerland's Burgenstock later in the day.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to rigorously and seriously pursue the process of implementing the opposite side's commitments,” he said.
He added that today's meeting in Switzerland aims to follow up on the implementation of the Islamabad MoU on ending the war, dated June 18, 2026.
Under clause 13 of the memorandum, he noted, the commencement of negotiations to reach a final agreement is contingent upon the implementation of points 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11.
"Without the implementation of these points, especially clause 1 (ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon), it is not possible to enter the stage of negotiations for a final agreement,” Baghaei emphasized.
In addition to the aforementioned clauses, today's discussions will be focused on reviewing the measures envisioned for the implementation of points 10 (concerning Iran's oil exports) and 11 (the release of Iran's blocked assets).
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is heading the Iranian delegation to the Switzerland talks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Vice Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri-Kani, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Abdolnaser Hemmati, and some deputy ministers, are also accompanying him.
US Vice President JD Vance heads the American delegation. He is accompanied by presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also in Switzerland to participate in technical-level talks as a follow-up to the Iran-US MoU.
On Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his American counterpart Donald Trump remotely signed the MoU, which brings about a permanent end to the illegal US-Israeli war of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
The 14-point deal includes a commitment from both countries to hold further talks on a final agreement in the next 60 days.
It calls for a permanent end to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, the phased lifting of US sanctions, the removal of the naval blockade on Iran within 30 days, and the restoration of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
On Saturday, Iran’s central military command officially declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all maritime traffic, citing US and Israeli violations of the Tehran-Washington MoU.
