Israeli war minister pushes Gaza mass-expulsion plan framed as ‘voluntary emigration’

Israel Katz, Israel’s minister of military affairs, has advanced plans for the mass expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip under the guise of “voluntary emigration,” as Israel’s blockade continues to devastate the besieged territory.

Speaking on Wednesday, Katz said the plan would proceed “at the proper time and in the proper manner,” despite mounting evidence that the occupying entity has committed ethnic cleansing and war crimes against the inhabitants of the Palestinian territory.

His remarks came alongside Israel’s announcement that it had killed Mohammed Odeh, head of the armed wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, along with his wife and three children.

Back in March, Israel’s security cabinet approved a proposal drafted by Israel Katz to establish a special directorate tasked with facilitating what it described as the “migration” of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

The campaign to depopulate Gaza intensified throughout the genocidal war that began in October 2023, alongside calls from Israeli settlers and far-right politicians for permanent control and the establishment of new settlements inside the enclave.

Israeli MP Limor Son Har-Melech openly advocated the expulsion of Palestinians and full occupation of Gaza during a visit to areas near the besieged enclave.

She said on X that “Only conquest, expulsion, and settlement will restore security for the residents of Israel...There is no alternative to conquest, expulsion, and settlement."

Many Israeli officials have explicitly called for the forced expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, which constitutes a war crime under international law.

Son Har-Melech also said there was “no escape” from Israeli control of the Netzarim Corridor and from establishing a permanent settlement presence there.

Despite Israel’s ongoing assault, siege, and destruction of civilian infrastructure, most Palestinians in Gaza say they refuse to leave their homeland.

A US-backed ceasefire announced in October was intended to halt the war and facilitate the entry of aid, food, fuel, and medicine into Gaza. However, Israel has been violating the agreement and largely maintaining the blockade, leaving humanitarian conditions catastrophic in the densely populated besieged strip.

Israeli airstrikes and shelling have meanwhile continued, killing more than 800 Palestinians since the ceasefire.

Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed more than 72,700 Palestinians and wounded over 172,000 others since October 7, 2023.
