Pezeshkian: Iran ready to assure world it is not seeking nuclear weapons

?Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says the Islamic Republic is prepared to reassure the international community that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons.

Speaking on Sunday on the sidelines of a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Pezeshkian said Tehran remains committed to diplomacy and regional stability.

The president said that Israel,  not Iran, is the main source of war and insecurity in West Asia.

“We are ready to assure the world that we are not seeking nuclear weapons and are not seeking unrest in the region,” he said.

“It is the Israeli regime that uses every opportunity to keep war and instability alive.”

Pezeshkian, however, reiterated that Iranian negotiators “will never retreat from the country’s dignity and honor.”

Tehran asserts its legal right under the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to develop nuclear technology for energy production, medical research, and scientific advancement.

The US and its allies, however, accuse Iran of seeking the technical capability to produce a nuclear weapon.

Tehran has repeatedly declared that it is not seeking nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

Iranian officials say the country’s policies, as well as the fatwa issued by the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, banning nuclear weapons, are clear and decisive on the matter.

Pezeshkian’s remarks come as Iran and the United States reportedly move closer to finalizing a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the imposed war and reducing tensions in the region.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that the negotiations, mediated by Pakistan and facilitated in part by Qatar, are now in the “finalization stage.”

According to Baghaei, the proposed framework focuses on ending the war, halting US maritime aggression, and securing the release of Iran’s blocked assets abroad.

He stressed that the nuclear issue is not currently the central focus of the talks. Baghaei also described Washington’s claims over Iran’s nuclear program as a “pretext” for aggression against the country.

The US-Israeli aggression against Iran began on February 28 and triggered large-scale Iranian missile and drone retaliation against Israeli targets and American military assets across the region.

A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect on April 8 after 40 days of war, though negotiations in Islamabad later stalled due to excessive US demands.

Baghaei said the latest mediation efforts have nevertheless brought the two sides closer to a possible “win-win solution,” while emphasizing that Tehran remains cautious because of Washington’s shifting positions.
