Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations has said that the “outlaw and terrorist” Israeli regime poses an ongoing and significant threat to both regional and international peace and security.
Amir Saeid Iravani made the remarks during a statement delivered at a UN Security Council session on Tuesday, which was convened to address the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime in the West Asia region, with a specific emphasis on Palestine.
Iravani highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, which continues to suffer devastation and remains under blockade, emphasizing that Israel persistently breaches the ceasefire through military assaults and stringent limitations on humanitarian access, exacerbating hunger and the suffering of civilians.
He also pointed out that there is a continued expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank, a clear contravention of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, stressing that this expansion further entrenches the occupation and instability in the region.
The ambassador further reaffirmed Iran’s support for credible initiatives aimed at alleviating the plight of the Palestinian people.
“Any viable solution for Gaza must ensure a durable and permanent ceasefire, the full withdrawal of occupying forces, and unhindered humanitarian access, while fully respecting the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” he said.
He further noted the necessity for accountability, asserting that individuals responsible for severe breaches of international law, war crimes, and crimes against humanity must face justice.
Iravani also observed that Israel’s aggressive actions extend beyond Palestine. He pointed out that the regime continues to breach international law throughout the region by engaging in destabilizing actions and acts of aggression within Syrian territory, maintaining an illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, and persistently violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.
The Iranian ambassador underscored that the Security Council must take decisive action to ensure that Israel fully adheres to the ceasefire in Lebanon, ceases all assaults against civilians and civilian infrastructure, and withdraws its occupying forces forthwith.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Iravani recalled that on February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel initiated an unprovoked war of aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in stark violation of international law, including the prohibition on the use of force and the peremptory norm (jus cogens) against aggression.
He asserted that the aggressors have perpetrated grave violations of international humanitarian law, actively targeting civilian infrastructure.
Iravani provided an example of this aggression, highlighting the destruction of a girls’ school in Minab, which killed over 168 students.
As of 8 April, he said, at least 3,375 civilians have been killed, with more than 700 educational institutions, alongside healthcare and cultural facilities, having been attacked. Additionally, critical industrial infrastructure has also been subjected to targeted assaults.
The Iranian ambassador asserted that both the United States and the Israeli regime must accept full accountability for their actions, underscoring the necessity of pursuing individual criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in line with international law.
He further emphasized that security within our region is “indivisible and deeply interdependent,” asserting that the attainment of genuine collective security requires a unified response that directly confronts the primary source of instability, namely the occupying Israeli regime.
Furthermore, the ambassador categorically rejected “baseless allegations” against Iran, stating that pointing fingers at Iran for the region’s woes serves only to divert attention from the underlying issues and the destabilizing behaviors of the US and Israel.
“Regrettably, some delegations attempted, once again, to ignore the root causes of the current situation in the region and deflect blame onto Iran rather than address the unlawful and destabilizing actions of the United States and the Israeli regime,” he said.
In conclusion, Iravani stressed that, as an occupying regime and aggressor, the representative of Israel possesses no legal, moral, or political authority to lecture or accuse member states.
