Nikol Pashinyan reappointed as Armenia’s prime minister
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has reappointed Nikol Pashinyan as the country’s prime minister, giving him the official mandate to lead the Caucasus nation for another term.
“Based on Article 149, Part 1 of the Constitution: Appoint Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister,” read a decree by Khachaturyan released on Sunday.
The appointment came three days after Pashinyan and his cabinet resigned to comply with the terms of Armenia’s constitution.
It came just hours after the National Assembly, Armenia’s parliament, convened its first meeting in the new session, allowing Khachaturyan to appoint the candidate named by the parliamentary majority as the new prime minister.
Pashinyan released a video of his meeting with Khachaturyan right after he was appointed prime minister.
His Civil Contract Party won nearly half of the votes in the June 7 parliamentary elections, which recorded a 59% voter turnout.
He is expected to lead a new cabinet, although many believe his policies will remain mostly pro-Western despite maintaining good relations with Russia and other regional powers.
Pashinyan has served as Armenia’s prime minister since 2018, after leading street protests that forced long-time leader Serzh Sargsyan out of office.
Under his rule, Armenia lost control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan after a war with its neighbor and was ultimately forced to accept the return of tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians who were displaced from the region by Baku.
During his years in office, the prime minister has tried to avoid tensions with major regional powers, namely Russia, Turkey, and Iran, despite having close relations with countries in the West.
