April 27: Iran strengthens its diplomatic hand as US faces mounting strategic setbacks

Iran continues to consolidate gains on multiple strategic fronts, with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) reaffirming the cohesion and battlefield resilience of the Axis of Resistance, while firmly dismissing Israeli claims of Hezbollah’s military capabilities as unfounded.

Alongside military signalling and legislative initiatives to regulate maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran continued to consolidate its regional and diplomatic positioning amid the ongoing war imposed by the United States and Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, adding another diplomatic dimension to Tehran’s outreach, with Putin praising the Iranian people’s “bravery and heroism” in defending their sovereignty.

Iranian officials also pointed to the humanitarian toll of the imposed war, citing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, while noting rising international criticism of illegal US sanctions and policy choices from China and Russia. 

 Key developments on day 59 of the war, the twentieth day of the ceasefire:

• During their meeting in St. Petersburg, Putin told Araghchi that the people of Iran are fighting bravely and heroically for their sovereignty.
• The commander of the IRGC Quds Force, Brigadier General Esmail Qa'ani, dismissed Israeli propaganda aimed at downplaying Hezbollah's power, while underlining regional resistance forces' all-out support for the movement.
• Iran condemned the United States for the outright legalisation of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas, following the interception of Iranian oil tankers by US forces under the pretext of so-called "seizure warrants."
• The chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Ebrahim Azizi, said a motion is being prepared in the Iranian parliament to regulate future transit through the Strait of Hormuz, stipulating that ships allowed to pass through the key waterway must pay tolls in Iranian rial currency.
• The deputy chief of Iran’s judiciary and secretary of the High Council for Human Rights, Nasser Seraj, criticised UNICEF for failing to denounce crimes committed by the US and the Israeli regime against Iranian children during the recent illegal war of aggression.  
• Iran's Minister of Education, Alireza Kazemi, said 279 students and 67 teachers were martyred in the recent war, and hundreds of schools were also damaged.
• Iran’s Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi said the United States and Israel carried out nearly 240 attacks on medical facilities in the Islamic Republic during the imposed war, leaving at least 50 hospitals damaged. 
• Hezbollah’s secretary general, Sheikh Naim Qasim, said Iran’s insistence on ending Israeli aggression against Lebanon during indirect negotiations with Washington was the decisive factor that made a ceasefire with Israel possible.
• The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health said Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Sunday killed 14 people, including two women and two children, and wounded 37 others.
• An Israeli soldier was killed as a military helicopter sent to airlift wounded troops was targeted after fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement launched a drone strike against the occupation forces.
• Israeli forces destroyed the power and water systems of a Christian-majority town in southern Lebanon, as the regime continues to violate a ceasefire between the two sides.
• Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said the United States needs to revise its policy on nuclear issues to open the door to an agreement with Iran.
• The pro-resistance Handala hacking group said it has access to the identities of tens of thousands of “terrorist” US Navy personnel who committed crimes during the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran, including the murder of schoolchildren in Minab.
• China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the US for imposing sanctions on Chinese refineries on the pretext of links with Iran.
• The US-Israeli war on Iran has caused a disruption in supplies of crucial raw materials and triggered a sharp spike in prices of the printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in nearly all electronic devices, ranging from smartphones and computers to AI servers, Reuters reported.
• European leaders are growing increasingly concerned that tensions stemming from the Trump administration's unprovoked aggression against Iran, and the Islamic Republic's subsequent retaliation, could escalate from an economic shock into a broader political crisis for the European Union, according to American news website Politico.
• German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the US is being “humiliated” by the Iranian leadership. He said that Iranians are clearly stronger than expected, and the Americans clearly have no truly convincing strategy in the negotiations.
• The Bahraini Interior Ministry said it has revoked the citizenship of 69 individuals and their families for "expressing support for Iran (retaliatory) attacks" against US and Israeli military assets across West Asia amid the war of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
• The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) survey revealed that UK retailers have experienced the sharpest year-on-year decline in sales in more than four decades, driven by the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran, which has heightened inflation fears among shoppers.
