Deputy FM: Iran’s top priority nothing but to 'decisively’ defend country
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi says the Islamic Republic’s first and foremost priority is "decisive and firm" battle to defend its territory against the ongoing unprovoked US-Israeli war of aggression.
"They must pay for their actions. The atonement is in fact the decisive operations that we are carrying out in self-defense. It is the Islamic Republic of Iran that determines the end of the war," he said on Tuesday.
The senior Iranian diplomat noted that a number of countries have approached Tehran demanding cessation of hostilities.
"China, Russia, France and even some regional states are in contact with us, alongside Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Some of these states actually intend to take concrete action, halt the war and help conclude a ceasefire," he said.
Gharibabadi emphasized that it is pointless if a ceasefire comes into effect that would stop the aggression now, but the Islamic Republic comes under attack six months later.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister stated that under Article 51 of the UN Charter, nothing should impair the right to self-defense and a halt to legitimate self-defense could take place should the acts of aggression cease and not be repeated.
Earlier, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed that several countries had initiated mediation efforts to halt the brutal, imposed war waged against the Islamic Republic by the United States and the Israeli regime.
In a post on the social media platform X on Friday, President Pezeshkian said, "Some countries have begun mediation efforts and our response to them is clear."
He stressed that these efforts must target the true aggressors, the US and Israel, who launched this unprovoked aggression.
He reiterated Iran's unwavering commitment to “lasting” peace in the region, declaring, "Yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation's dignity, sovereignty, and the rights of our great people."
The president emphasized that any genuine mediation must confront those who underestimated the resilience of the Iranian nation and deliberately ignited this war through their criminal attacks.
