FM says historic opportunity at hand for unprecedented deal; warns Iran protects sovereignty at any cost

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran and the United States have a “historic opportunity” at hand to strike an “unprecedented agreement,” while warning that the Islamic Republic would protect its sovereignty at any cost in the event of renewed American military adventurism.

The top diplomat made the remarks in a series of posts on X on Tuesday, commenting on the pending third round of fresh indirect nuclear negotiations between the two sides that is expected to go underway in Geneva in a matter of days.

Such agreement, he added, is capable of addressing “mutual concerns” and achieving “mutual interests.”

However, the deal’s potential emergence hinges on diplomacy being “given priority,” Araghchi noted, suggesting that the US not compromise the renewed diplomatic process by resorting to aggression against the Islamic Republic as it did during the previous series of talks between the countries last June.

On the part of the Islamic Republic, he guaranteed determination “to achieve a fair and equitable deal—in the shortest possible time.”

The official, meanwhile, reiterated the Islamic Republic’s core principles regarding its peaceful nuclear energy program.

“Our fundamental convictions are crystal clear: Iran will under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon; neither will we Iranians ever forgo our right to harness the dividends of peaceful nuclear technology for our people,” he stated.

At the same time, the foreign minister stressed that Iran’s approach to negotiations would not compromise national sovereignty.

“We have proven that we will stop at nothing to guard our sovereignty with courage. We bring the same courage to the negotiating table, where we will pursue a peaceful resolution to any differences.”

The comments came amid significant American military buildup in the West Asia region, including around Iran, featuring two aircraft carriers as well as numerous warplanes and missile systems.

Araghchi’s remarks echoed those made by other senior Iranian authorities, who have cautioned Washington and its allies against seeking to take advantage of the country’s engagement in diplomatic process to subject it to new uncalled-for and illegal acts of aggression.

Earlier, President Masoud Pezeshkian said indirect talks with Washington had produced positive indications, while similarly emphasizing preparedness for all contingencies.

“Recent negotiations [with the US] involved the exchange of practical proposals and yielded encouraging signals,” the chief executive said in a post on X on Sunday.

Iran has “made all necessary preparations for any potential scenario,” he added.
