Iran in no way seeking nuclear weapons: Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has once again reiterated that the country is not seeking nuclear weapons in any way or form.

“We have repeatedly declared that we are in no way seeking nuclear weapons. Our policies, as well as the fatwa of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution (Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei), are clear and decisive on this matter,” Pezeshkian said in an interview on Tuesday.

He said that rumors and propaganda claiming that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons are politically motivated, while expressing hope that the international community, especially the United States, recognizes this reality.

However, he insisted that the country needs nuclear science to respond to its medical and technological needs.

“We cannot accept being deprived of using nuclear science and knowledge to save the lives of our patients, advance our industries, and develop our agriculture,” said the Iranian president.

Pezeshkian said that Iran is fully prepared for any form of verification of its nuclear program, suggesting the country has no concerns about intensive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Excerpts of the interview were published by the Iranian Presidency hours after Iranian negotiators held a second round of nuclear talks with US representatives in the Swiss city of Geneva.

The talks began earlier this month in Oman after both Iran and the US de-escalated their rhetoric about a potential military confrontation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led the Iranian delegation in Geneva, said the negotiations with the US had made progress.

Araghchi said the talks on Tuesday concluded with an agreement on a set of guiding principles that will shape future discussions toward a potential deal.
